  • Bells

Some Seelie faeries even use them to protect themselves from more wicked faeries.

    Food

Foods like baked goods, cream, and butter can be left as an offering for the fae to keep them at bay.

    Charms

Amulets and talismans made of rowan trees or various herbs can help ward off the fae as some consider them sacred.

    Cold Iron

The most effective way to ward off the fae. It weakens and repels them, but also greatly offends them and could lead to more attacks.

  • The fae can be very dangerous. It’s important to watch how you interact with them. Follow these rules to protect yourself while in the Otherworld.

Never tell a faerie your true name
Knowing someone’s true name gives you power over them. Only give your true name to those you trust. To be safe, give a made up name or nickname instead.

    Don’t be nosy
Faeries greatly value their privacy. Spying or intruding on a faerie’s territory can lead to injury or death, so it’s best to mind your own business.

    Never lie to a faerie
The fae are unable to lie and mean everything they say. They expect the same from you.

    Be careful of manipulation
The fae may be unable to lie, bt they can be ambiguous and hide the meaning of their words. They are also great at finding loopholes and will twist your words to make you regret what you asked for.

    Avoid dancing
This often ends in stories of dancing to your death.

Be wary of gifts from the fae
Gifts, including food, can be a dangerous thing. Receiving one will put you in debt, and the fae always expect something in return of equal or greater value. On the other hand, there will always be a reward if you do something of service for a faerie.

    Always be polite
Being inhospitable and selfish are frowned upon by the fae, and can result in serious punishment. You must be extra polite and flatter them while refusing gifts and food.

    Always keep your promises
Promises are powerful. The fae will stick to promises even if it means them death. If you don’t keep your promises, you can expect revenge.

    Be careful of iron
Cold iron weakens and repels faeries. It’s good if you’re looking for protection from the fae, but it will offend them if you plan on interacting with them.

  • There exists a legend of a human woman taken by the fae to attend a faerie birth. They covered her eyes with illusions, making her believe she was to aid a human noblewoman. She went about her duty and helped deliver the beautiful baby boy.

The human woman was then given some drops to put into the child’s eyes. Having never heard of putting drops into a newborn’s eyes, the woman was hesitant. Her curiosity got the best of her, and she tested the drops on herself before giving them to the child.

Unbeknownst to the woman, she had been taken to help the Faerie Queen with the birth of her son, and the drops were a special gift meant for the prince, which would allow him to see through faeries’ illusions.

Having taken the drops herself, the woman could now see where she truly was. Despite her best efforts to hide her reaction, the Faerie Queen could tell that the woman could see the truth. This upset the Faerie Queen, who was initially going to send her back to the human realm unharmed, but demanded the woman’s eye as payment instead.
